AC said the same thing re: rock v. rose petal, and I think that's right. The brown & sticky has been one of our favorites too, but I'd never heard the continuation before-- thanks!

I think the difference between the rock and the rose petal is that you could return the rock and it would be perfectly useful; not so much with the rose petal. The lost rock still has value to its owner; the rose petal doesn't. Could this be a segue into an introduction to economics, and the different ways that things gain and lose value? :^)

> But doggone it, we’re keeping the brown stick.

One of my favorite jokes!

Q: What's brown and sticky?
A: A stick!

(Continues:

Q: What's red and can't climb trees?
A: A brick!

Q: What has four legs, is big, green, and fuzzy, and can kill you just by landing on you?
A: A pool table!)

About the poppies: California law protects them wherever they grow. I don't know anyone who's ever been busted for it though and plenty of people do pick them.

P. and I will be in Cali soon. Details to come!

Ooh, please tell me why re: the California poppy. We've been told they grow like weeds here, & often see them by the sides of roads, so I've mentally classified them as similar to dandelions. But perhaps they're planted or sown deliberately?

Thanks, J. Hope to see you out here soon!

Delightful post, C. Pix, too. I think children present an essential enigma of consciousness for me, which is do they realize how adorable they are?!

And I grew up surrounded by yards using those landscaping stones. Memories. (Also, I'm not so sure about picking California poppies.)

Hm. I love this post!
