22 November 2014 Sugar Pumpkins

Saturday, November 22nd, 2014

Sam and I baked a pumpkin pie today after roasting the homegrown sugar pumpkins our friend Connie gave us. The roasting went fine, and the filling looks yummy, but as for the crust… let’s just say I have a whole lot of appreciation for pastry chefs. And Sarah Lee. We’ll see what our guinea pigs […]

21 November 2014 Ferments

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Sam’s “Cultured Cultures” class ended today at CHEC. It was essentially a cooking class, where the kids learned to make fermented vegetables such as cabbage, ginger, pickles, and beets. They also made a class cookbook and packaged samples that they’ll sell at the CHEC Winter Festival in a couple of weeks. Sam came home with […]

17 November 2014 Nails and Knives

Monday, November 17th, 2014

AC and Sam have been doing physics projects and experiments at night. This evening they learned about incline planes and wedges. AC had Sam hammer three different nails: one standard, one blunt, and one chiseled. The idea was to see which one took the most work to drive in and pull out. As expected, the […]

14 November 2014 Tea Shoppe

Friday, November 14th, 2014

23 October 2014 Football Contrast

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

Every week at Sam’s soccer practice I am amused by the contrast of the field: american footballers (all boys) on one side and european footballers (all girls) on the other. And that’s a pitcher’s mound in the center of the shot. The girls end up having to play soccer on the baseball field :-/
