30 November 2013 Wreathe

Saturday, November 30th, 2013

I’m rather proud of our homemade wreathe. When I was going through yard waste last week in preparation for setting up the composter, I stuck a few evergreen bush fronds in a wire circle and stuck it on the door. Today we embellished it with old Christmas ornaments and ribbon. Voilà. We are tempted to […]

26 November 2013 Let Them Eat Stuffing

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

Even if I ruin the turkey this Thanksgiving, at least we’ll have stuffing (family recipe from my Dad’s mother).

25 November 2013 A la bibliothèque

Monday, November 25th, 2013

French Club kids unleash their energy on the library.

24 November 2013 Old Stomping Grounds

Sunday, November 24th, 2013

I spent a great deal of time here when I was in grad school. I must admit it felt strange to breeze in only to return a single book. (I have an alumni account, which is handy for some of my freelance magazine work). Back in the day, I checked books in and out by […]

23 November 2013 Miter Saw

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

Sam and AC made great progress on the composter today. I still find it terrifying to watch her operate the miter saw.

22 November 2013 Guess Who’s Getting Glasses?

Friday, November 22nd, 2013

The whole family, actually. In about two weeks both AC and Sam will have joined me in bespectacled-ness. AC for reading and Sam for distance.

21 November 2013 The Cast & Crew of Perseus and Medusa

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

Story of the World Club made crafts for an unrehearsed and quite fun performance of the myth of Perseus and Medusa. There were so many parts to play that some of the kids had multiple roles. I even got drafted to play Andromeda, chained to a rock. Sam had three parts: one of the Grey […]

19 November 2013 The Princes in the Tower

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013

Sam read about the Princes in the Tower today–poor Edward and Richard were imprisoned in the Tower of London by their Uncle, Richard, who was supposed to protect the throne for Edward but instead took it for himself. The princes disappeared and were presumed to have been murdered. Sam, of course, is fascinated by this […]

17 November 2013 Blown Glass Ball

Sunday, November 17th, 2013

A ball filled with her own breath. And her father, photo-bombing the shot (of course!)

16 November 2013 Go Teal Dragons!

Sunday, November 17th, 2013

Last game of the SOCA U8 league season. The Teal Dragons Played the Kelly Green… I dunno… Monsters? Sam was the only girl on either team. In this shot, Kelly Green player #14 tries to take the ball away from Sam–look closely– using his elbow. Foul! Am I becoming a soccer Mom(ster)? Eep!

15 November 2013 Blowing Glass

Friday, November 15th, 2013

Sam got to blow her own glass ornament at Sunspots Studios in Staunton, VA today, courtesy of one of my writing buddies. She also took this great picture of the process. (Thanks, Caroline!) The glass smith inserted a long tube into the blob of glass and then instructed Sam when and how hard to blow. […]

13 November 2013 Red Lettuce

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Thanks to the floating row cover, aka the shroud in the cemetery garden, the lettuce and broccoli are surviving the overnight freezing temperatures quite nicely. The lettuce is Red Sails and Rouge d’Hiver. I forget which is which, but both are tasty.

11 November 2013 Alex, Zoé et Compagnie

Monday, November 11th, 2013

French Club is split into two groups this year– Les Grands et Les Petits. With Les Grands we are working with a textbook program called Alex et Zoé. The kids recently completed the first unit and today they presented a skit to Les Petits. I don’t think Les Petits were too impressed, but I was […]
