27 April 2010 Mound of Graff

Edradour Graff

We walked back to Edradour distillery today–Scotland’s smallest distillery–via a slightly different route through the Black Spout woods. A tour, a tasting, and now I know much more than I ever did before about how whisky is made. Sam thought it all noisy and smelly (she didn’t get to taste any of course– “Come back in 14 years!” said our guide). Indeed the aroma of malt barley both inside and outside the facility was thick and pungent. I think some of it is still stuck to my nostrils. What looks like a mound of dirt in the picture is “graff”–residue from the grain mashing process. It is waiting to be carted away to the farmer next door who will feed it to his cattle.
